Ansmann PowerLine 4 PRO Ni-MH charger after some time using it, I did one sad discovery.
While Ansmann it did use one modern and smart electronic processor this capable to truly refresh older Ni-mh cells so them to restore their capacity, team worked at product physical design this made a tragic mistake.

Negative contacts of all four AA ports they housed over a thin (internal) plastic lip this be part of top cover, this narrow and thin line of plastic supposedly would work as rest and pressure area when AA cells inserted in the charger.
Unfortunately this plastic wall it did damaged in all four AA ports and this causing now poor electrical connection at the negative side.

Such poor electrical connection it does causing several problems at charger circuit, results of battery capacity tests could be false, battery internal resistance check this fails too, fully charging of single AA cell there is no warranty that it did happen.

Due the fact that bellows this plastic wall (lip) there is another compartment which is the housing area of low row of push buttons, it is not possible to repair it.

Therefore my own alternative method was to buy five economy chargers for Li-ion cells and to use their housing as external battery holder.

For my new project I did select Universal Li-ion 3.7V Smart Battery Charger for 18650 16340 14500 26650 EU Plug.
Now, 26650 cell dimensions these are compatible to Ni-CD 1.2V cells and this option of cycling Ni-CD cells with this charger this is something that I was missing.

I will not get in to wiring and How-To details.
This work it is a challenge that all experts they will find all answers as soon they decide to start a similar project.
My intention this is to motivate ITTSB Blog readers by informing them that you can cure this problem.

My very own last challenge this has to do about aesthetics and I am now thinking of how I can create one base-stand that PowerLine 4 PRO among with external charging ports will look and become as one piece of equipment.

While product catalog of 2008 of Fluke Corporation this still looks almost identical to one made in 2017,

KS U1272A with Windows Free Logger software including compatibility with Windows XP among with Bluetooth modules,  this is an very superior data logging setup.
Multiple meters can be logged, and speedy measuring engine of its one U1272A it can detailed capture even voltages coming from true pulsing chargers, them be technology of 90s.
Such a setup this is by far superior of what an Fluke 289 this can do alone or with it software that is not free of charge.

HIOKI DT4282 meter this is by far superior regarding speed - accuracy - number of counts - LCD display and getting a trusty measurement at Law of Ohm measurements and also at measurements involving pulsing power supply,  but logging software this is very basic and limitation of USB connectivity it does limit down usability in the regard of  having and a powerful data-logger.


Therefore if Fluke Corporation this thinking seriously to shake the market?  They should deliver :
a) One direct competitor to KS U1272A by including identical in value and usability data logging software.
b) One direct competitor to HIOKI DT4282 for those expecting highest performance at field work.

Fluke 289 can stay in the market at 50% discounted price.
FLUKE 28II can stay in the market at 40% discounted price from what is marketed today, as what it does mostly worth today this is it armor ( IP & drop-proof ).
And for FLUKE 87V it is it time this to get retired.

Therefore and in conclusion, if Fluke Corporation this is ready to compete and Win ? the stadium waiting for them to show.
ITTSB Blog looks forwards at getting NEW product samples and scheduling product reviews for them,  as soon Fluke Corporation marketing team this sends a direct proposal which this would be further analyzed.
   
Fluke Corporation has stay behind also at product families of Oscilloscopes and of Power quality analyzers, but this is another chapter that currently I am not going to touch.

Undescribed happiness   :)

One DOA LED came close to scare me for few minutes,  but it is my fault that I did not inspect received merchandise prior using it.  :P

Now my Ansmann Energy 8 among with my Ansmann Energy 16, they simile more to LED light wall projectors  ;D ;D

This LED lights upgrade it did manage to make me very happy !!   ;D

This is no more a charger,  this is now an LED lights projector   8) (even at daylight).

thank you for your excellent post of your repair. It also saved my day, because you warned of the wrong poarity of the 400V caps.

I repaired two of them and both work fine. One of them has a problem with both right 9V charging ports. they are flashing red/green without a 9V block is in the charging port. I wrote an email to Ansmann support yesterday and waiting for an answer. It´s easier to ask, than to damage the PCB, because the quality of the PCB is not the best.

Now I also want to replace the LEDs and saw (you posted it on December 02, 2017) that you ordered LEDs with common anode. But the printing on the PCB shows a common cathode.

Meanwhile I checked the original LEDs and they have a common anode (as you ordered). So the printing on the PCB for the LEDs seems to be also incorrect.

I will also post the answer of Ansmann and if the repair of the 9V charging ports comes to a positive end.



Hi Ulf and welcome at ITTSB Blog.

Your fist problem this is caused because your PCB this is polluted by a foreign object, I am facing the same problem at one AA Port at Ansmann Energy 8.
Possibly when I did  de-soldering of LED's  from de-soldering pump they have fall tiny solder particles over the PCB and they now cause a bridge.
I am currently using testanol Active Reiniger to remove pollution, and I am currently inspecting this PCB centimeter by centimeter.

Ansmann support will not help you, they are clueless regarding electronics repairs.


I got also confused regarding LED type selection in the beginning, while I did a quick seminar to my self by making an small schematic, in the end I trusted the simplified description of the Chinese seller,  that these LED all that they can produce this is Red & Green and nothing else.  ;D

New update February 2018 

I made my decision to replace entire number of LED at my Ansmann Energy 16, but I did included in my order enough LED and for Ansmann Energy 8.  :)
Below there is three pictures clearly demonstrating that PCB maker had to improvise of how to add two center LED over this PCB,  specific improvising it would add more trouble at replacing these LED.

But either way, addition of new LED they do transform this charger and lights looks bright as this to be a Christmas tree.
Therefore it does worth the trouble doing such an upgrade.     :)

I can not believe it that for a first time, I am compensating my digital camera so to darken the picture because of excessive LED brightness.

At 9V ports I did cut LED head and I solder new LED over these copper extenders.

Either way these charger now won another 12 years of life cycle, and next project to follow this is LED upgrades also at my Ansmann Energy 8.

After 86 days my order arrived from China  :P
New LED they are quit bright but green light has an unusual color temperature when red light this is normal.

I am currently working at replacing these LED,  taking out one PCB by removing solder of about 50 pins this is very time consuming, and entire process this can take 4 hours if you walking carefully so to avoid destruction of fragile parts.
Additionally you must be careful at adjusting its LED (leads) height for compatibility purposes with the top cover.
Black protective covers they also must be removed, and at re-installation it would be needed a bit of hot-glue.

I have just soldered first new LED and I took few pictures for you to see.

LED for 9V charging ports they are fitted inside copper tubes these working as height extenders, and for specific challenge I will make a decision later on.

My comparison of no-name F100mA fuses with Littelfuse 217 M100 this offered to me NEW knowledge.

First find that unbranded fuses these has Cold nominal resistance at range of 120 Milli-Ohm instead of approximately five Ohm that Littelfuse should have, this is a shocking find.

Ten Littelfuse 217 M100 fuses that I got, they do not have finest measuring consistency regarding Cold nominal resistance.
At 16 Celsius only two of ten fuses they come close at the mark of 5.5 Ohm,  when most of them they measure from 5.1 Ohm up to 5.4 Ohm.
I am aware that this is old stock and I am going to speculate that in recent years manufacturing process this has improve.

In the positive side of things, 1048 Voltage/ Current calibrator output this was changing when I did test it with both fuses.
Therefore this calibrator circuitry was sensing the difference, but true good news are that this calibrator was automatically adjust inner electronics so output this to be according to LCD display.   

In simple English,  actual ohms resistance of its fuse was not causing a difference which will drive this calibrator out of it own specifications in the regard of output.
From the other hand, 1048 this has several operating modes, this can be setup as transmitter (active output) and also as receiver (working as multimeter).
For now I did skip this testing of 1048 as receiver and what influence fuses can cause at this operating mode.
When you do select Littelfuse 217 fuses as intended replacement, this will insure max compliance according to 1048 Electronics design (circuitry).

Below are few interesting pictures of my tests. :)
And naturally I will send to trash these 10 unbranded fuses, mostly because I do not trust them for any use.
