FLUKE 80K-40 High Voltage 40KV HV Probe teardown
« on: March 16, 2014, 12:25:33 AM »
E bay some times is a treasure in finding tear down pictures of items when they are on sale just for parts.  ;)

I do own an FLUKE 80K-40 which I got from Canada and it is in top shape, but never thought to open it up like in the pictures below.  :P

Most probes on eBay with chopped down cables they have fail passing from calibration inspection, and those calibration labs they destroy them by chopping down their cables.

The smart ass who trying to sale them on eBay as parts he is up to few cash, but in 99% of such items, there is no chance to bring them back in life.

Either way, enjoy the view.  ;)

By this message I will share some info about checking the condition of your newly purchased used probe.

FLUKE advice that the very specific probe at 40KV as also the one at 15KV, both have an resistance between the probe tip and the ground lead that is  999 M Ohm (1GΩ) which is a huge number.

To measure that resistance it is possible, if your handheld multimeter this supports measurement in nano Siemens NS
1GΩ=1nS

Multimeter list capable for nano Siemens:
BRYMEN BM869
FLUKE 28II  / 87V  / 8050A
AGILENT  U1272A & U1273A
HIOKI DT4282

By measuring the two pins in the banana plug I measured 1 M Ohm, which all meters can do that.  :)

Bellow is the nano Siemens pulse of how it looks in my oscilloscope.

Within 2021 the industry of solar panels, now moving ahead at the transformation to ACV due 2000 DC voltage (solar parks).
One Asian multimeter manufacturer this October released an NEW DMM this capable to measure up to 2000V DC.

Therefore they are good chances the old FLUKE 80K-40, this to start gaining again interest from the market of dedicated tools for solar parks.
